The painting shows Raphael sitting down and talking with Adam and Eve about Satan’s plot to tempt them into disobeying God. Satan is also shown in the painting in the background to be in the form of the serpent.

The painting adapts Paradise Lost because it is an illustrative depiction of Milton’s epic poem. Blake forwards Milton’s work by using the same setting for the piece as in the poem, which is in the Garden of Eden. However, in the poem, Eve is not present for the conversation with Raphael. This adaptation of Paradise Lost is significant because it depicts Satan in the background as the serpent, wrapped around the tree of knowledge and waiting to tempt Eve, and therefore Adam. This is ironic because the setting in the picture is when Raphael warns Adam about the future temptation.
