A striking work by Rupert Bunny that invites comparison to Edvard Munch's "The Scream of Nature." Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, was the goddess of spring's bounty before she was carried off by Hades while playing in a flowery meadow with her companions, the Oceanids (the three thousand daughters of Oceanus and Tethys, each of whom was the patroness of a particular river, lake, flower, cloud, etc.). In abducting Persephone, Hades is thus wresting an essential aspect from Nature herself, and Bunny's piece accordingly conveys a sense that all of Nature is recoiling at this crime.
