An image of a Chinese goddess that Athanasius Kircher identified with Isis and Cybele in his popular treatiseChina Illustrata. A lavishly illustrated work compiled from the field reports of Jesuit missionaries, it answered Europe's thirst for knowledge of China, describing a remarkable drink called "tea," and exotic animals like the "fast cow" (rhinoceros) and "marine horse" (hippopotamus). Kircher supposed that China had been settled by the Egyptians after the Biblical flood, as evidenced by their use of so-called "hieroglyphics."
