An early piece in a series of 18 paintings of olive trees that van Gogh produced during his stay in the asylum at Saint-Remy. The nearby olive trees were an ever-changing subject for van Gogh, not only in terms of how their colours varied with the season, but in their spiritual significance to the artist. Blueish olive trees in May suggested the cycle of life, whereas the bronzier foliage of autumn evoked Jesus in Gethsemane. Van Gogh thought of this particular version as a daylight complement to "The Starry Night."Size guide:
